BT Datastream is a dedicated one-to-many broadband service that enables you to deliver your own broadband solutions through your own IP transport services, or other protocol.
Using DSL technology, BT Datastream allows an ordinary copper telephone line to support Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based, high speed digital transmission. With the addition of your own IP layer, you can offer internet-based services to your customers.
The flexibility of ATM can be used to provide new data services to multiple End Users.
Service providers are responsible for providing the End User equipment and also need to purchase one or more 155Mbit/s or 622Mbit/s Customer Access Links, a virtual path to each exchange they wish to offer service from, and an End User Access for each of their End Users.
These components are not sold separately outside the full BT Datastream service and must be used together. Service providers are responsible for providing the equipment that goes to make up the components; this is outlined below.

|---|---|
| The Customer Access Link (CAL) | This is the link from the Network Termination Equipment (NTE) in your premises to a BT Datastream Point of Presence; or, alternatively, an ATM Access Port on a BT ATM switch, at a BT Datastream Point of Presence. Service providers connect to the BT ATM core network through a 155Mbit/s or 622Mbit/s CAL which is provided solely by BT or by interconnecting using ATM in-span handover. The data is then carried over dedicated virtual paths through the BT network to the End User’s local exchange. |

| Virtual paths (VP) | A VP creates the route from your premises, or point of handover in the case of in-span handover, to the BT Datastream exchanges where your End Users are served from. A number of VP service classes are available providing a first step in allowing Service Providers to offer voice, data, internet, video, gaming and more over both ADSL and SDSL End User products. Please note that CBR and VBR-rt Service Classes are not available at all BT Datastream enabled exchanges. |
